Female Dog Season Pants: How to Choose the Right Nappy

Female Dog Season Pants: A Practical Guide to Choosing the Right Nappy

Is your female dog coming into season for the first time? Perhaps you’re wondering how to protect your furniture, carpets and bedding, or you’re simply unsure which type of dog season pants to choose.

At Glenndarcy, we’ve been designing reusable dog nappies and season pants since 2011. Our products were originally developed for our own dogs, and over the years we’ve learned that finding the right fit is just as important as choosing a pretty design.

Whether your dog is a tiny Chihuahua, a fluffy Pomeranian, a sleek Whippet or a stocky French Bulldog, this guide will help you understand your options.

1. What Happens When a Female Dog Comes Into Season?

When a female dog comes into season, also known as being in heat, her body goes through hormonal changes as part of her reproductive cycle.

Signs may include:

  • Swelling around the vulva.
  • Blood-tinged discharge or spotting.
  • Increased licking and grooming.
  • Changes in behaviour, such as becoming more affectionate, restless or distracted.
  • Increased interest from male dogs.
  • Changes in toileting or marking behaviour.

A dog’s season commonly lasts around two to four weeks, although this varies between individual dogs.

Some female dogs have very little visible discharge, while others experience considerably more. Some are also extremely good at keeping themselves clean.

Important: A dog may still be fertile after her bleeding has reduced or changed colour. Do not assume she is no longer at risk of mating simply because the discharge has become lighter.

If you notice unusually heavy bleeding, unpleasant-smelling discharge, signs of illness or anything that concerns you, contact your veterinary surgeon.

2. Why Use Dog Season Pants?

Dog season pants, sometimes called dog period pants, dog heat nappies or female dog knickers, are designed to hold an absorbent pad around your dog’s hindquarters.

They can help collect season discharge before it reaches your furniture, bedding, carpets and floors.

Benefits of reusable dog season pants include:

  • Helping protect sofas, carpets and dog beds.
  • Holding a suitable absorbent pad securely in position.
  • Providing a washable alternative to disposable outer nappies.
  • Offering different designs to suit different body shapes.
  • Allowing you to change the absorbent pad without replacing the entire garment.

Glenndarcy season pants feature waterproof fabric to help reduce moisture passing through the outer garment, with soft linings for comfort.

They are particularly useful indoors, when your dog is resting or spending time on furniture.

Remember: Season pants are a hygiene product. They are not intended to prevent mating.

3. Which Glenndarcy Season Pants Should I Choose?

Every dog is different, which is why we offer several styles rather than expecting one design to fit every body shape.

Traditional Female Dog Season Pants

Our traditional Glenndarcy female dog nappies are a popular starting point for dogs with relatively straightforward body shapes.

Made using waterproof PUL fabric with a soft lining, they provide practical protection while holding a compatible absorbent pad in position.

Available in a range of sizes, patterns and fastening styles, depending on the product.

Consider traditional season pants if:

  • Your dog has a fairly conventional body shape.
  • You can obtain accurate waist and body measurements.
  • You prefer a simple, lightweight design.
  • You want a reusable product with compatible washable or disposable pad options.

Glenndarcy Adjustable Flexi-Pants

Some dogs are much more difficult to fit than others.

Dogs with narrow waists, deep chests, sloping backs, rounded bodies or particularly thick coats can struggle to keep conventional nappies in position.

Our Glenndarcy Flexi-Pants were developed to provide greater flexibility when fitting different body shapes.

Flexi-Pants are adjustable in three key areas:

  • Waistband.
  • Tail hole.
  • Elasticated body sides.

This allows a more individual fit than traditional fixed-shape dog pants.

They can be particularly useful for Whippets, Greyhounds and other narrow-waisted breeds, as well as dogs with rounded bodies or unusual proportions.

The additional adjustment can also help when measuring your dog is difficult.

Consider Flexi-Pants if:

  • Your dog’s nappies tend to slip or twist.
  • Your dog has an unusual body shape.
  • Your dog’s measurements fall between conventional sizes.
  • You need additional adjustment to accommodate coat thickness or an absorbent pad.
  • You want a versatile design for seasons or urinary incontinence.

Glenndarcy All-in-One Unisex Dog Nappy Suit

Some dogs need additional help keeping their nappy securely positioned, particularly when resting, stretching or moving around.

Our All-in-One Unisex Dog Nappy Suit offers an alternative to separate pants.

The one-piece design connects the body section and nappy section, helping reduce the movement that can occur with conventional separate garments.

It may be worth considering if ordinary season pants repeatedly slip despite careful measuring and adjustment.

4. Tail Hole or No Tail Hole: Which Is Best?

This is an important consideration, particularly for dogs with very short tails or no visible tail.

Traditional Season Pants with a Tail Hole

For dogs with a conventional tail, a correctly positioned tail opening allows the tail to sit naturally outside the garment.

The opening should be suitable for your dog’s tail position and size without pulling the pants out of shape.

No Tail Hole Dog Nappies

Some breeds, including French Bulldogs and Bulldogs, have very short or naturally absent tails.

A conventional tail hole may be unnecessary and can leave an unwanted opening at the back of the pants.

Our Glenndarcy No Tail Hole Dog Nappies are designed specifically for suitable short-tailed or tailless dogs.

They provide rear coverage without a conventional tail opening and are available in a range of sizes and designs.

Consider a No Tail Hole Nappy if:

  • Your dog has little or no visible tail.
  • A conventional tail opening leaves too much exposed space.
  • You need improved rear coverage.
  • Your dog’s body shape makes conventional season pants difficult to fit.

5. Washable or Disposable Pads: Which Should I Choose?

The season pants themselves are the reusable outer garment. An absorbent pad is used inside to collect discharge.

Both washable and disposable pads can be practical options, depending on your preference and the compatibility of the particular nappy.

Glenndarcy Washable Eco Pads

Our Glenndarcy washable Eco Pads offer a reusable alternative to disposable absorbent pads.

They feature multiple absorbent layers and a waterproof backing to help reduce moisture passing through the pad.

Benefits include:

  • Washable and reusable.
  • Available in different sizes.
  • Designed for compatible Glenndarcy products.
  • Useful for managing season discharge and suitable levels of urinary leakage.
  • Can help reduce reliance on disposable pads.

Our washable pads are particularly convenient if you keep several available so a clean pad is ready whenever one needs changing.

Disposable Absorbent Pads

Suitable adhesive-backed disposable sanitary towels, pantyliners or incontinence pads can also be used with many Glenndarcy season pants.

Supermarket own-brand products can be an economical option.

Choose a suitable size and absorbency level, ensuring the pad fits inside the garment without being too bulky.

Important: Not every Glenndarcy product uses the same absorbent pad attachment system. Always check the individual product description and pad compatibility before ordering.

6. How Do I Measure My Dog for Season Pants?

Getting the correct fit is one of the most important steps when choosing a dog nappy.

A poorly fitting nappy may slip backwards, twist sideways, rub against the skin or restrict movement.

We recommend the following:

  1. Measure while standing: Your dog should be standing naturally, rather than stretching or crouching.
  2. Check while sitting: Some dogs change shape considerably when sitting, especially around the waist and abdomen.
  3. Allow for coat thickness: Long or fluffy coats can make a dog appear larger than its actual body measurements.
  4. Consider the absorbent pad: A thick pad will affect how the garment fits.
  5. Check the back length: This is particularly important for dogs with long or short bodies.
  6. Look at all measurements: Don’t choose a size using waist circumference alone.
  7. Compare against the individual product chart: Different Glenndarcy styles have their own measurements and adjustment options.

What if My Dog Is Between Sizes?

If your dog’s measurements fall at the upper end of a size range, consider whether the next size may offer a more comfortable fit.

However, always check the full measurements rather than automatically choosing a larger size.

Remember that dogs of the same breed can vary enormously in shape.

Our tip: If you’re unsure which style will suit your dog, Glenndarcy adjustable Flexi-Pants may be a useful starting point because of their three areas of adjustment.

7. How Often Should I Change My Dog’s Season Pants?

Keeping your dog clean and comfortable is just as important as protecting your home.

Season pants and absorbent pads should be checked regularly throughout the day.

Our recommendations:

  • Check the pad frequently and change it whenever wet or soiled.
  • Never leave a saturated pad against your dog’s skin.
  • Remove the pants for toileting outdoors.
  • Allow regular nappy-free periods so your dog’s skin can remain clean and dry.
  • Check for rubbing or irritation, particularly around the waistband and leg openings.
  • Wash the outer garment according to its care instructions.
  • Keep spare pads or another pair of pants available if needed.

Some dogs are very comfortable wearing season pants, while others need a little time to become accustomed to them.

Introducing the pants gradually, using praise and positive reinforcement, can help your dog feel more relaxed.

8. Important: Dog Season Pants Do Not Prevent Mating

Glenndarcy dog season pants and nappies are designed for hygiene and protection against discharge. They are NOT contraception and must never be relied upon to prevent mating or pregnancy.

A determined male dog may be able to move or remove the pants, and the garment does not provide a reliable physical barrier against mating.

If your female dog is in season:

  • Keep her securely separated from unneutered male dogs.
  • Supervise her carefully, including in your garden.
  • Keep her on a lead during walks.
  • Avoid situations where unfamiliar male dogs may approach her.
  • Do not assume that wearing pants makes her safe around male dogs.
  • Continue precautions throughout the entire season, even if visible bleeding has stopped.

Season pants help keep your home clean. They do not prevent a dog from being mated or becoming pregnant.

If an accidental mating occurs, contact your veterinary surgeon promptly for advice.
