Which Dog Nappy is Best for Urinary Incontinence?

A Practical Guide to Choosing the Right Dog Nappy or Belly Band

If your dog is experiencing urinary incontinence, occasional leaks or accidents indoors, finding the right protection can make everyday life more comfortable for both of you.

But with so many different types of dog nappies, belly bands, adjustable pants and absorbent pads available, where do you start?

At Glenndarcy, we’ve been designing practical, reusable dog nappies and belly bands since 2011. Our products were originally developed to help our own dogs, and we understand that every dog has a different shape, size and set of needs.

This guide will help you choose a suitable option for your dog.

1. Is Your Dog Male or Female?

This is often the first consideration when choosing a dog nappy.

Female Dogs – Nappies and Adjustable Pants

Female dogs generally need protection around their hindquarters to help contain urine leaks.

Our Glenndarcy female dog nappies and season pants are available in different styles, including traditional pants and our popular adjustable Flexi-Pants.

Consider our Flexi-Pants if:

  • Your dog has an unusual body shape.
  • You need more adjustment than traditional dog pants offer.
  • Your dog’s measurements fall between conventional sizes.
  • You need to accommodate different types of absorbent pads.
  • Your dog experiences urinary leaks or requires additional protection.

Glenndarcy Flexi-Pants are adjustable in three key areas, helping you achieve a comfortable fit without relying on a single fixed measurement.

They can be used with suitable disposable pads, Glenndarcy washable Eco Pads or to help keep an appropriate disposable nappy securely positioned when greater absorbency is required.

Male Dogs – Belly Bands and Adjustable Nappies

Male dogs often benefit from a belly band, which wraps around the body and holds an absorbent pad over the appropriate area.

Belly bands can be particularly useful for light urinary leakage, dribbling or indoor marking.

Our Glenndarcy male dog belly bands are available in a choice of designs and fastening styles, including adjustable options.

Consider a male belly band if:

  • Your male dog experiences occasional urine leakage.
  • You need to manage dribbling or indoor marking.
  • You want an easy-to-remove, washable outer garment.
  • Your dog is comfortable wearing a band around the lower body.

For dogs requiring additional coverage or a different fit, our adjustable male nappy designs and Diamond Belly Bands may offer useful alternatives.

2. Does Your Dog’s Nappy Keep Slipping Off?

One of the most common difficulties with dog nappies is keeping them in the correct position.

Dogs come in an enormous variety of shapes. Some have narrow waists, others have broad chests, rounded bodies, thick coats or very little difference between their chest and waist measurements.

A nappy that fits one dog perfectly may not stay in place on another dog of the same breed.

If your dog’s nappy tends to slip, twist or work its way backwards, consider a more adjustable design.

Glenndarcy Flexi-Pants

Our Flexi-Pants offer adjustment in three key areas, making them particularly useful when ordinary pants are difficult to fit.

Glenndarcy All-in-One Unisex Dog Nappy Suit

Our All-in-One Unisex Suit offers an alternative design for dogs that need additional help keeping their nappy correctly positioned.

The one-piece construction connects the body covering and nappy section, helping reduce the movement sometimes experienced with separate pants.

Suitable for male or female dogs when fitted with the appropriate absorbent pad arrangement.

3. Washable Pads or Disposable Pads – Which Is Best?

The most suitable absorbent pad depends on how much urine your dog passes, how frequently leaks occur and how often you can check and change the pad.

Washable Eco Pads

Glenndarcy washable Eco Pads provide a reusable alternative to disposable absorbent pads.

They feature absorbent inner layers and a waterproof backing to help reduce leakage through the pad.

Washable pads can be particularly useful for smaller leaks or light urinary incontinence.

Advantages include:

  • Reusable and washable.
  • Available in different sizes.
  • Designed for compatible Glenndarcy nappies and belly bands.
  • Can reduce reliance on single-use disposable pads.
  • Easy to keep spare pads ready for changes.

The level of absorption varies depending on pad size, use and washing history.

Disposable Absorbent Pads

For dogs experiencing larger volumes of urine leakage, suitable disposable incontinence pads may be a more practical choice.

Many Glenndarcy products are designed to accommodate disposable sanitary towels, incontinence pads or suitable disposable nappies.

Always check the individual product description for compatibility and choose an absorbency level appropriate to your dog’s needs.

Important: Not every Glenndarcy product is compatible with every pad type. Check the product information before ordering.

4. How Do I Measure My Dog for a Nappy?

Correct measuring is one of the most important steps when choosing a comfortable, secure-fitting dog nappy.

We recommend:

  1. Measuring your dog while standing naturally.
  2. Checking the measurements again when sitting, particularly for dogs with rounded bodies.
  3. Allowing for thick or long coats.
  4. Considering the thickness of the absorbent pad you intend to use.
  5. Comparing all relevant measurements against the individual product size chart.

If your dog is at the upper end of a size range, consider whether the next size would provide a more comfortable fit, taking the individual product’s adjustment options into account.

Avoid selecting a nappy based on breed or weight alone. Two dogs of the same breed can have very different body measurements.

5. What if My Dog Has Heavy Urinary Incontinence?

Dogs experiencing frequent or heavier urine leakage may require a more absorbent solution than a standard washable pad can provide.

Depending on your dog’s size and shape, suitable options may include:

  • Adjustable Flexi-Pants with an appropriately sized disposable absorbent product.
  • A male dog belly band with a suitable higher-absorbency disposable pad.
  • An All-in-One Unisex Suit with compatible absorbent protection.

The correct choice depends on your dog’s anatomy, the volume of urine and how securely the product fits.

No reusable outer nappy can guarantee protection against every leak.

6. How Often Should I Change My Dog’s Nappy?

Check your dog’s nappy frequently and change the absorbent pad promptly whenever it becomes wet or soiled.

Prolonged contact with moisture can irritate the skin, so it is important to keep the area clean and dry and allow suitable nappy-free periods.

Never leave a wet nappy on your dog for extended periods.

If your dog is experiencing new or unexplained urinary incontinence, increased urination or discomfort, consult your veterinary surgeon. Dog nappies help manage accidents but do not treat the underlying cause.

7. Finding the Right Solution for Your Dog

At Glenndarcy, we know there isn’t one perfect nappy for every dog.

A small female dog with occasional leaks may need something very different from a larger male dog experiencing frequent urine dribbling.

That’s why we’ve developed a range of reusable dog nappies, adjustable pants, male belly bands and washable absorbent pads, with designs intended to suit different body shapes and needs.
