Why Does My Dog's Nappy Keep Slipping Off?
A Practical Guide to Finding a Better-Fitting Dog Nappy
Does your dog’s nappy keep slipping down, twisting sideways or falling off completely?
You’re certainly not alone. One of the biggest challenges when choosing dog nappies or season pants is finding a design that stays comfortably in position.
Dogs come in an enormous variety of shapes and sizes, and what fits one dog perfectly may not work for another, even within the same breed.
At Glenndarcy, we’ve been designing reusable dog nappies and belly bands since 2011. Over the years, we’ve learned that body shape can be just as important as size when it comes to finding the right fit.
Here are some common reasons why dog nappies slip and what you can do to help.
1. Your Dog Has a Narrow Waist or Sloping Back
Some dogs, particularly Greyhounds, Whippets and other sighthound-type breeds, can be especially challenging to fit.
These dogs often have:
- Deep chests combined with very narrow waists.
- A naturally sloping back and tucked-up abdomen.
- Short, smooth coats that offer very little grip.
- Body proportions that don’t suit traditional dog pants.
Because their bodies taper so dramatically, ordinary dog nappies can gradually slide backwards, particularly when walking, lying down or getting up.
Their sleek, shiny coats can make the problem worse, as there is less friction to help keep the fabric in position.
How Glenndarcy Flexi-Pants Can Help
Our adjustable Flexi-Pants are often a particularly useful solution for dogs with this type of body shape.
Unlike conventional pants that rely on a fixed waistband and body shape, Glenndarcy Flexi-Pants offer adjustment in three key areas, helping you achieve a more individual fit.
This additional adjustment can help keep the pants more securely positioned on dogs with narrow waists, deep chests and sloping backs.
While no nappy can be guaranteed to stay in place on every dog, the flexibility of this design makes it well worth considering for breeds that struggle with ordinary pants.

2. Your Dog Has a Round or Barrel-Shaped Body
At the other end of the spectrum, some dogs have broad, rounded bodies with very little difference between their chest and waist measurements.
This can be common in certain compact breeds or dogs with a naturally stocky build.
Traditional dog pants may gradually work their way backwards because there is less natural definition around the waist to help hold them in position.
Dogs with short backs can also be difficult to fit, especially when the nappy is too long for their body.
What Can Help?
Consider a design that allows greater adjustment rather than relying entirely on a conventional waistband.
Our Flexi-Pants may provide a better fit, while our All-in-One Unisex Dog Nappy Suit offers an alternative for dogs that need additional help keeping their nappy in place.
The all-in-one design connects the body covering with the nappy section, reducing reliance on the waistband alone.

3. Your Dog Has a Thick or Fluffy Coat
Dogs with thick, long or particularly fluffy coats can present another fitting challenge.
When measuring over a full coat, the apparent waist size may be considerably larger than the dog’s actual body circumference.
Once the dog moves or lies down, the coat can compress, leaving the nappy fitting more loosely than expected.
Our Measuring Tips
- Measure your dog while standing naturally.
- Gently flatten thick fur when measuring, without pulling the tape tight.
- Check the fit again while your dog is sitting or lying down.
- Allow for the thickness of the absorbent pad.
- Make sure the nappy is secure without compressing the body or restricting movement.
For fluffy dogs, adjustable fastening can make a significant difference to achieving a comfortable fit.
4. The Nappy Is the Wrong Size or Shape
It’s tempting to choose a dog nappy based on breed or weight, but neither tells the whole story.
Two dogs of the same breed and similar weight can have very different waist measurements, back lengths and body proportions.
A nappy that is too large may slip, while one that is too small can pull out of position, restrict movement or cause discomfort.
We recommend checking all the measurements provided on the individual Glenndarcy product size chart.
Our tip: If your dog falls at the very top of a size range, consider the next size where appropriate, particularly if you intend to use a thicker absorbent pad. However, check the full measurements rather than automatically sizing up.
5. The Absorbent Pad May Be Affecting the Fit
The type and thickness of the absorbent pad can also influence how securely your dog’s nappy sits.
A thick or bulky pad can change the shape of the garment, while a poorly positioned pad may cause the nappy to twist or pull unevenly.
For the best fit:
- Choose a pad compatible with your particular nappy or belly band.
- Position the pad correctly before fastening.
- Avoid using pads that are too wide or bulky for the garment.
- Check the fit again once the pad is in place.
- Replace wet or soiled pads promptly.
Glenndarcy offers washable Eco Pads as well as products compatible with suitable disposable absorbent pads.
Always check the individual product description for pad compatibility.
6. Your Dog’s Nappy Moves During Sleep
Some dogs manage perfectly well wearing nappies while walking around, only for the pants to slip when they curl up, stretch out or change sleeping positions.
This is particularly common when the dog’s body shape offers very little natural grip around the waist.
A more adjustable design may help, but for dogs that repeatedly lose their nappies while resting, an all-in-one style may be worth considering.
Our Glenndarcy All-in-One Unisex Dog Nappy Suit provides an alternative to separate pants or belly bands and is designed to help keep the nappy section correctly positioned.
7. Which Glenndarcy Product Should I Choose?
Choose Adjustable Flexi-Pants if:
- Your dog has a narrow waist, deep chest or sloping back.
- Your dog has a rounded or unusual body shape.
- Traditional nappies tend to slip backwards.
- You need greater flexibility when adjusting the fit.
- You want to use compatible washable or disposable absorbent pads.
Consider the All-in-One Unisex Dog Nappy Suit if:
- Your dog’s nappy repeatedly slips despite careful fitting.
- Your dog has a body shape that makes separate pants difficult to keep in place.
- Your dog needs additional help keeping the nappy positioned while resting or moving.
- You prefer a design that connects the body covering and nappy section.
